Located around 60 kilometres south of Melbourne on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Elgee Park sits within a natural, north-facing amphitheatre. From the highest point of the vineyard, the land opens out towards the waters of Port Phillip Bay before gently falling away towards the local creek line. This natural setting plays an important role in the character of our wines.
Cool maritime breezes move through the vineyard, providing relief during the height of summer and helping to preserve freshness and natural acidity in the grapes. The long, cool growing season allows the fruit to develop slowly, building flavour and complexity while retaining the elegance and vibrancy we look for in our wines.
The vineyard is made up of sandy loam over areas of clay, with patches of quartz running through the site. These variations in soil contribute to the diversity and complexity of the vineyard, with each block offering its own character.
For us, healthy soils are the foundation of healthy vines and expressive wines. We work to care for the land using regenerative viticultural practices alongside organic principles wherever possible. Our approach is one of continual improvement: nurturing the soil, encouraging biodiversity and returning nutrients to the land rather than simply taking from it.
Inter-row plantings of legumes are regularly used to help improve soil health and naturally increase nitrogen, while careful vineyard management ensures the vines remain balanced and resilient.
Our 10-acre vineyard is predominantly planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, varieties that thrive in the cool maritime climate of the Mornington Peninsula.
Alongside these are small parcels of Riesling and Viognier, both with a long history at Elgee Park. We have also retained the original Old House Block, where some of our earliest Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines continue to grow today — a living connection to the beginnings of the vineyard.
Our vineyard has been shaped by the hands of a small, dedicated team for almost 20 years. Their deep knowledge of the land, the individual blocks and the character of each vine is an invaluable part of Elgee Park.
There is no substitute for time spent in the vineyard. Our vines are meticulously cared for throughout the growing season, with hand pruning and hand harvesting an essential part of our approach.
For us, this level of care is about more than simply producing grapes. It is about understanding the land, working with its natural rhythms, and giving each vine the attention it needs to produce fruit that truly reflects its place.
